Opportunities abound this autumn for growing in faith,
thinking through issues that affect daily life, and
gaining some skills to help in practical ways of
service.
When
looking up the word ‘opportunity’ in the
dictionary I came across this:
‘An
occasion is that which falls in our way, or
presents itself in the course of events; an
opportunity is a convenience or fitness of time,
place, etc., for the doing of a thing. Hence,
occasions often make opportunities.
If
you haven’t ever been to a Deanery Discipleship event
before then maybe this is the time to start, to make the
most of the opportunities and enjoy the occasions which
have fallen in your way here in the Petersfield
Deanery!
And
if you are an ‘old’ hand then we hope you will come back
again.

The death of absolute truth: or the birth of absolute
relativism?
His
Honour Judge Christopher Clark, QC
Judge
and Chancellor of the Diocese
Tuesday October 30th, 7.30-9.30pm
At St
Peter’s Church, Petersfield
With
Christian values under attack and the increase of
relativism there is a question over where the basis of
British values lie. What is the moral basis for our
culture, and how does this question affect law makers
and law keepers? Judge Clark will
help us explore this important and fascinating area
of decision-making, which affects the very basis
of our judicial system and society.
If we can… we should. What are the limits of scientific
exploration?
Canon Dr
Maureen
Palmer
Tuesday November 27th,
7.30-9.30pm
At St
Peter’s Church, Petersfield
Science is consistently pushing at boundaries where
moral questions are raised. This session asks the
questions ‘how far is too far?’ and ‘who sets the moral
boundaries to such work?’ Canon Maureen got us thinking
at a recent Deanery Synod meeting and we have invited
her back again to explore the area of debate in more
depth.

JOHN OF THE CROSS
Thursday September 13th, 7.30pm - 9.15pm
Revd
Carolyn Headley, at the Rectory, West Meon
Revered in Spain as one of its greatest poets, John’s
path through life testifies to a deep and committed life
in Christ, despite tremendous suffering, giving rise to
profound spiritual insights through his poetry and his
commentaries on the depths it expresses. Perhaps known
best in Christian spirituality for expressing the Dark
Night of the Soul there is a great deal to learn from
looking at his life and work.
LEADING
CHURCH INTERCESSIONS (repeat)
Wednesday 31st October,,
7.30pm-9.30pm at St Mary Magdalen Church, Sheet
Revd
Carolyn Headley
Intercessions made easy. It is both a privilege and a
responsibility to lead the prayers at a service and when
asked to do this many people feel inadequate, or feel
they just wouldn’t know where to start or what to say.
This evening will try and help by looking at what we are
doing in corporate intercessions, how to put them
together with some different forms, and give pointers in
delivery.
This
is a repeat of the previously run course.

Youth
Pilgrimage to Taize Summer 2008.
In July or August of 2008 The Revd Dominic Clarke from
St Peter’s Church in Petersfield is hoping to lead a
group of young people from the area aged between 15 – 29
years on pilgrimage to Taize (situated in Burgundy,
France - see www.taize.fr ). Taizé, is the home
of an international, ecumenical community, where the
brothers are committed to material and spiritual sharing
and simplicity of life. For over 50 years many thousands
of young people from many countries have gone to Taizé
each year. As well a being a deeply spiritual, and often
life changing event, it promises to be a fun and
interesting experience with a chance to meet and share
with other young people from all over the world. Anyone
interested in exploring this opportunity further should
contact The Revd Dominic Clarke on 01730 266199 / 01730
